‘Spaceballs’ Sequel in Development at Amazon MGM with Josh Gad and Mel Brooks

A sequel to the cult classic ‘Spaceballs’ is in the works at Amazon MGM Studios. The new film will star Josh Gad and be produced by Gad alongside the legendary Mel Brooks. Josh Greenbaum will direct, and the screenplay is being crafted by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Gad.

Production Details

The original ‘Spaceballs’, released in 1987, was a parody of the ‘Star Wars’ franchise and other sci-fi series. The new sequel, currently in early development, has not yet revealed its plot details. Kevin Salter will serve as the executive producer. The screenwriting duo Samit and Hernandez are known for their work on ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’, ‘Pokemon Detective Pikachu’, and ‘Addams Family 2’.

Cast and Crew

Josh Gad, widely recognized for his roles in ‘The Book of Mormon’ and as the voice of Olaf in ‘Frozen’, is set to lead the cast. Mel Brooks, who directed and starred in the original ‘Spaceballs’, returns as a producer. Brooks recently revisited another of his classics with ‘History of the World, Part II’ in 2023.

Legacy of ‘Spaceballs’

The original ‘Spaceballs’ featured Bill Pullman, John Candy, Daphne Zuniga, and Rick Moranis. Though it received mixed reviews upon release, it has since become a beloved cult hit. This sequel aims to capture the humor and spirit of the original while appealing to a new generation of fans.
